Do you have a lot of books that you need to put into storage? Do you worry about damage over time?

There are over 116 thousand libraries in the US today. That’s a lot of books to protect.

Books are very delicate, especially if stored for a long time. Here are some tips on how to pack books for storage to keep them safe.

How To Pack Books For Storage

Once you’ve sorted your books and decided which ones you will keep, it’s time to get packing. With the right supplies and a packing strategy, you know your books will reach their destination safely.

1. Select Medium Packing Boxes

Never pack books in a large box when packing for storage. Books are heavy, and a large box is difficult to move. A medium box is a better choice. Don’t use packing boxes with handle holes as they are a potential entry point for rodents or pests.

When you move the boxes, don’t stack them on top of one another. Their weight can buckle the box underneath, breaking the seal and causing damage.

2. Choose The Right Storage Facility

Moisture and pests are two dangers to avoid when storing your books. Your books need a consistent temperature and humidity level year-round.

Look for an indoor storage unit in a climate-controlled storage facility. This self storage facility even offers an interior camera so you can keep an eye on your belongings.

Evaluate the risk for pests, including rodents. Install shelving in your storage unit and place the boxes with the books on higher shelves to reduce the chance of a pest invasion. Never store the boxes on a concrete floor to protect them from moisture.

3. Use Plastic Containers

When you store your books for an extended period, plastic containers are an excellent way to pack them. They protect your books from drops or sharp blows during the move.

Cardboard boxes are fine for short moves, but they are susceptible to moisture from humidity over time. The airtight seal prevents moisture and pests from getting at your books. One disadvantage is that plastic doesn’t allow your books to breathe.

4. Position Books Properly

Pack hardcover books standing on end with their spine against the side of the bin or box. You can also pack hardcover books with the spine down. Never place them with the spine facing the top of the box as the pages will buckle over time, damaging the book.

Stack softcover books flat in piles. Fill any empty spaces with packing paper or plastic bubble wrap to prevent the books from moving in the box.

5. Use Packing Paper

Wrap each book individually in acid-free paper to protect them and prevent yellowing. You can place a piece of cardboard between each book as well. Bubble wrap is another wrapping option.
