Glamour, Recognition & Affluence attracts most of the students to Fashion Designing. However, Fashion Designing is much more than that. Fashion designing also offers you a platform to showcase your creativity, your visualization to conceptualize beautiful awe inspiring apparels, footwear, accessories, handbags etc. It involves long hours of painstaking hard work, where you investigate and understand consumer preferences, their tastes, fashion trends, market situation, economic scenario, socio-cultural trends, production techniques, materials available etc. and then design appropriate concepts in clothing and accessories incorporating the right material, fabric in apt colours, patterns and texture etc. And believe me when I say that this is just the start since after conceptualization of design, a Fashion Designer is also involved with prototyping the design to understand the flow of cloth, look and finish. He then collaborates with teams of different departments for its final production. And then there is more since he is involved with merchandising, marketing and even selling so as to ensure the success of the collection and profitability. Furthermore, incase the collection doesn’t generate the expected results, and then he is on a fact-finding mission to ensure that the next collection is a hit and generates the desired results.

  Types of Fashion Design:

  • Haute Couture Fashion:  Being first in the fashion design hierarchy, Haute Couture Fashion entails designing and creating individual work of art for private clients. These customized clothing and accessories require extreme attention to detail and countless man hours utilizing finest of materials and expensive notions. They are usually made by hand and require diligence and attention to details so as to achieve perfection & exquisiteness.
  • Luxury fashion: This is next in hierarchy and since it offers its consumer sense of exclusiveness, it involves use of nuanced designs & expensive high quality materials. Though it is not hand-made, it is produced in limited quantity making it elite, highly priced and desirable.
  • Ready-to-Wear Fashion: Being mass-produced in standard sizes, this is easily available to public at large. It is available in large quantities and is designed as per trends so as to appeal to a larger set of audience. To ensure easy accessibility, these clothes are available at ordinary shops on Main Street (or high street). Hence Ready-to-wear fashion is also termed as High street fashion.
  • Fast Fashion: Consumers of Fast Fashion wants to look trendy without splurging. This is possible since Fast Fashion usually is mass produced & involves fashion designs inspired from fashion shows.
  • Economy Fashion: This is mass produced and involves use of cheapest materials as well as cheap labour and hence is low in quality and in cost and has a shorter life.
